Telmo Pires - Através do Fado

Following Fado Promessa in 2012 and Ser Fado in 2015, Através do Fado is the artist’s third album recorded and produced in Portugal. Here Telmo Pires also takes on the mantle of co-producer alongside Davide Zaccaria, musician and producer of his previous albums.

In the last few years, Telmo Pires has won over the hearts and minds of the public and press across Europe, gaining a reputation for not only being a new voice, but for having a fresh image and attitude on the contemporary fado music scene.

The fado singer (fadista) is known for his characteristically intimate and personal creative process. Telmo Pires lets on that his art is nurtured by his growth as an artist and human being. “All I do has grown organically, and it was always that way – whether on my artistic journey or in my personal life. One thing always has an impact on the other. Every new work also reflects a fresh way of looking at things, a new milestone in my life. I see life, love, art, and ‘my’ city through my own idea of fado. That’s where the album’s title comes from.”

A fado - or ‘destiny’ - that led him to abandon his place of birth, Bragança, to settle in Germany, still at a tender age. In Berlin, Telmo Pires grew and plunged into the cosmopolitan culture of the German capital. It was here that he began his artistic journey, but his nostalgic longing, or saudade, at once so Portuguese and so fado, made him return to Portugal. In the neighbourhood bairro of Graça, one of the most typical of Lisbon, he found the peace of mind and restlessness that are fado music’shallmark. It is this feeling like no other, in harmony with his cosmopolitan upbringing in the heart of Europe, that has helped Telmo Pires fill concert halls over much of the Old Continent, as just happened on his last tour across Germany in November, where close to a thousand people came to see him at the Berlin Philharmonic.

Através do Fado is a strikingly pure album. The fadista preferred to record live in the studio together with the musicians that join him on stage, and as always under the guidance of Davide Zaccaria. Portuguese guitar, viola and bass. Telmo Pires admits this is the simplest, most direct way to get to the essence of his fado – with just one exception, the song Uma Flor de Verde Pinho by Manuel Alegre and José Niza. This song he admits to “wanting to sing for many years” but only now did he feel ‘mature’ and adult enough to do so. And so, he asked producer Zaccaria to write and record a new string arrangement. And it came together beautifully.

Telmo chose two of his own never-before-released compositions to open and close the album. Só o meu canto, with its striking melody, reflecting on how nothing is truly ours, but simply borrowed and which allows the fadista to show his talents and his range, not only as singer, but also as singer-songwriter. He closes with No Espelho, sung to the tune of Fado Vianinha by Francisco Viana. Unaccompanied, a cappella, as if abandoned by the world and life itself. A snapshot of a moment in time, in the life of a man who looks around and accepts what he sees, made up of a wealth of experiences, the hurt and joyfulness of the past, but where he cannot and will not ignore what is most important: the present.

The new album also includes the lyrics of other contemporary artists, such as the beautiful Sem peso ou medida by Tiago Torres da Silva, sung to the tune of Alfredo Marceneiro’s Fado Cravo, or Não sou nascido do Fado by Ana Lains, friend, singer and fadista in her own right. Telmo weds her lyrics to Mario José Lopes’ Fado Lopes, reaching new heights of expression as if it had been written with him in mind, so well does it suit his style and manner of interpretation.

With Era uma vez, Telmo created a melodic fado number which “is an earworm that stays there”, thanks to its rhythm and simplicity. A fado song that is an invitation to dance, up to the minute, with lyrics that poke fun at life nowadays in what for him is “the most beautiful city in the world”

With Através do Fado, Telmo doesn’t fail to impress and to consolidate his special place in the world of contemporary fado.
